Cage

Most of my cages are built with lots of space to roam. I try to limit the number of chickens to a max of 5 per 6x6x6 pen. My chickens are pretty much free roam during daytime to make sure they get enough sunlight and exercise to promote growth and good health. Exercise stimulate blood flow and that maximizes the oxygen level throughout the body; that should link to a toner body, more healthy feathering, and a happier bird.

Feed

The normal scratch is rather a good diet for most species of chicken but if you want lustrous looking feathers for your roosters, fresh greens can be given 4-7 times a week. I feed them mostly bean sprouts, chopped salads, lettuce, carrots, yams, etc. Giving them fish is a good treat too once in a while. Rice and wild bird mash with sunflower seeds is a good source of calcium for the egg laying months. I have noticed a stronger looking feather after this balanced diet as well.

Diseases & Problems

All my flock, at least, all my breeding birds had shots and gets checked regularly. Nevertheless, nothing is perfect. Haven't had an outbreak yet but I always would want to resort to something trustworthy in case things come up. I was advised to save this link that a friend from BYC have sent me and I want to share it with everyone in case you need it.
