My breeding project for the San Diego Zoo Red Jungle Fowls starts here. I vowed to keep this strain pure of what it is and won't outcross them. If I do, I will make a note of who what outcrossed, with what, etc.

Currently , both of my RJF hens are setting. They have lived together since they were chicks so I believe they are going to be great friends. Both are getting along fine in their "Brooding Coop". They set, eat, drink, dust bathe, etc. etc. together in their 7' x 4' x 3' just fine and I hope the two will get along with each other when their chicks hatch as well. Thats a pretty darn big coop for brooding so I hope they won't feel tight in space and keep to themselves with their chicks : )

Moma hen two, (Left), set on 3/15/08 & Moma hen one, (Right), set on 3/7/08 so that means that their chicks will only be a week apart.

* Update * (3-28-08)

Moma Hen 1 chicks are in! Yaaa!!! Hehe. I don't know how many eggs I have under her originally but 14 hatched! 2 Didn't. Overall, thats pretty SUPER! : )

From the batch, there are about 8-10 Jungle Fowls, 8-6 Onagadori. Dunno which is exactly though until they get a little older than I will know for sure. Overall, I am VERY happy with the hatch rate and the mom is SOOOOO great! Protective of her babies, yet not overly aggressive so that will do the other hen good once her's hatch too. Both have been such great friends so it shouldn't be a problem.

The Jungle Fowls hatched 1-2 days earlier than expected because in doing so, it just shows how "Pure" they are. The pure "Wildtype" chicks hatch from 18-20 days. Usually under 21 days like other chickens. My first few Jungle Fowl chicks hatched Mid-day of the 26th! (Day 19).

I will keep you all posted on how they are doing
